After breakfast we chose this beautiful cloudless day to jump into George and explore.
First stop was a microwave tower road that lead us to an easterly mountain top on the Rocky Mountain range. George performed like a trooper. In 20 minutes it felt like we were on top of the world! What a spectacular view! To the west and south were several glaciated Rocky Mountain peaks and below was the Liard valley with the sizeable Liard River gently meandering through it.
Another little expedition lead us to an abandoned settlement just near the suspension bridge crossing the river. In years gone by it was a gas station and homes that got left behind in time when the road was rerouted.
Another hot tub day topped things off at the pond in the hotspring. This made the day complete--or so we thought.
On returning to the RV's, Terry and I decided to take one final exploration run in George. We discovered what was the original Alaska highway complete with sizeable ditching on both sides. However it was so overgrown that only one lane was left to drive on. It took us along a trail-like road with a couple of ancient abandoned log cabins near the river. At one point we saw a sizeable cement foundation across the fast flowing river that was about 200 meters wide at this spot. This structure was a river port for a crossing point in the river when the road was built, 70 plus years ago by the Americans during World War II
A couple of huge mud stretches in the road offered a bit of concern and excitement and then it was back to camp where it took nearly an hour to clean the thick mud and clay that had covered parts of George and the trail bikes we had on the back-rack.
As I write this it is 10:26 and not quite dark yet and very mild out. Amazing place and our wild life count was topped up by 6 large bisons.
